Good healthcare is not only about treating disease. For patients living with serious or life-limiting illnesses, quality care also means managing symptoms, supporting families and helping patients maintain dignity and quality of life.

Nyambene Sub-County Hospital has developed palliative-care services as part of its wider approach to supporting patients with complex and long-term healthcare needs. The service brings together healthcare professionals from different disciplines, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, clinical officers and nutritionists.

The hospital’s palliative-care team has also worked to integrate palliative care into routine hospital services, while strengthening pain-management practices and staff capacity through training and mentorship. The Kenya Hospice and Palliative Care Association highlighted these developments following a 2022 mentorship and support-supervision visit to the facility.

Care that goes beyond treatment

Palliative care focuses on improving quality of life by addressing pain and other symptoms while also providing appropriate support to patients and their families.

By strengthening this service, Nyambene continues to broaden the range of care available to patients who need ongoing support alongside treatment.

At Nyambene, every patient deserves care that respects their health, dignity and quality of life.
