Level 5 Upgrade
Our vision for strengthening specialist, diagnostic and inpatient services as the hospital progresses toward Level 5 status.
Why the upgrade matters
Nyambene serves patients from across Igembe region and the wider region. As a Level 4 facility, the hospital provides a broad range of essential medical, surgical, maternity, diagnostic and specialist services. Some complex conditions, however, require a higher level of specialised care and may necessitate referral to facilities with additional capacity.
Progress toward Level 5 status is intended to strengthen the range and complexity of care available locally, while improving the hospital’s capacity to manage patients who require advanced specialist, surgical, critical and diagnostic services.
What the vision includes
- Critical care. Intensive care and high-dependency capacity for patients requiring close monitoring and advanced support.
- Surgical services. Expanded theatre capacity and additional inpatient capacity to support a wider range of surgical care.
- Specialist medicine. Broader specialist services and greater continuity of specialist clinics.
- Diagnostics. Expanded laboratory and imaging capability to support more complex clinical assessment and treatment.
- Infrastructure. Additional inpatient and outpatient facilities, oxygen plant and other essential hospital infrastructure.
- Workforce. Appropriate staffing, specialist skills, training and professional development to support expanded services.
Progress in stages
The transition toward Level 5 is a phased process involving infrastructure, equipment, specialist services and workforce development. Several important projects have already been completed, while others are still in progress.
