Accident and Emergency
Triage, resuscitation and stabilisation of acutely ill and injured patients, including medical, surgical, paediatric and obstetric emergencies.
The Accident and Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including weekends and public holidays. No appointment or referral is required. All patients are triaged on arrival to ensure that those with the most urgent needs are assessed and treated first.
The department is supported around the clock by laboratory, X-ray and CT imaging, theatre and inpatient services, with referral and transfer to higher-level care coordinated where required.
The department provides:
- Emergency triage, assessment and resuscitation
- Management of medical emergencies, including stroke, chest pain, severe asthma, diabetic emergencies, seizures and poisoning
- Surgical emergencies and trauma care, including road traffic injuries, burns, fractures and head injuries
- Paediatric emergency care
- Obstetric and gynaecological emergencies
- Urgent laboratory and imaging investigations
- Referral and transfer to higher-level care
