Nyambene Sub-County Hospital provides services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Accident & Emergency and Maternity services are available 24 hours. Specialist clinics operate during scheduled weekday hours, while urgent laboratory, imaging and essential medicines are available through Accident & Emergency when required.

No appointment is required for Accident & Emergency, Maternity or general outpatient services. Specialist clinics operate on scheduled days, so check the clinic schedule before travelling. Bring a referral letter where required or available.

Visiting hours are 6:00–8:00 a.m., 1:00–2:00 p.m., and 4:30–5:30 p.m. Certain clinical areas, including the Newborn Unit and Theatre Recovery, have additional restrictions.  Please check visiting hours page for details.

Yes. CT scanning is available on site alongside digital X-ray and diagnostic ultrasound. A clinician’s request or referral form is required, and some scans may require preparation such as fasting. Yes. The Renal Unit provides scheduled haemodialysis for eligible patients and accepts referrals and transfers from other health facilities. For appointments or transfer arrangements, call +254 724 265 555 and enquire about Renal Unit Services. Further information is available on the dialysis and renal care page.

Yes. The hospital has a resident fistula surgeon and provides ongoing assessment and surgical treatment for obstetric fistula. More than 232 women have been treated since 2022. Women experiencing leakage following childbirth are encouraged to seek assessment, regardless of how long ago the delivery occurred. Details are available on the fistula treatment programme page.

Bring your National ID, SHA or other health-cover details, referral letter where applicable, clinic card, previous medical records or test results, and current medicines or a medication list. For children, bring the Child Health Booklet, and for maternity care, bring your antenatal card where applicable. For emergencies, do not delay seeking care while gathering documents. For emergencies, do not delay seeking care because of your cover or ability to pay. For planned services, the Customer Care and SHA Desk can help verify your cover, explain applicable benefits and guide you on payment or pre-authorisation requirements. Yes. The hospital accepts referrals from dispensaries, health centres and other hospitals for services requiring higher-level assessment or care. Referring facilities should contact the hospital in advance when transferring critically ill patients to help prepare for their arrival. Visit the referrals page for contact details and procedures.

Employment opportunities are advertised through the authorised County Government of Meru recruitment process. Check the Careers page for available opportunities. The hospital does not charge applicants for recruitment or appointment. Student clinical placements are arranged between the training institution and the hospital.
