For women living with obstetric fistula, access to timely and specialised treatment can make a profound difference. Nyambene Sub-County Hospital has continued to strengthen its role in providing fistula care in Meru County, helping more women access treatment closer to home.

Through its partnership with the Fistula Foundation Treatment Network, Nyambene has developed into an important centre for obstetric fistula treatment in the region. The partnership was initially established to address a gap in access to fistula repair services, with surgical outreach and specialist support helping the hospital build its capacity for ongoing care.

The programme has continued to grow. According to the Fistula Foundation, Nyambene performed more than 70 fistula surgeries in 2025, representing substantial growth from the programme’s early years. The hospital is now listed among facilities providing fistula treatment in Kenya.

Restoring health, dignity and hope

Obstetric fistula can occur following prolonged or obstructed labour and can have significant physical and social consequences when left untreated. Access to appropriate surgical care, follow-up and specialist support is therefore an important part of maternal and reproductive healthcare.

At Nyambene, the continued development of fistula services reflects the hospital’s broader focus on expanding specialised care while strengthening access to essential services for patients across the region.
